Summary information

Since 1949, the Mouvement de la Paix
has been fighting against nuclear weapons. In 1950, the Stockholm appeal
received 15 million signatures in France against the use of nuclear bombs,
and 800 million throughout the world.

In a more recent period, the Mouvement de la
Paix has campaigned to stop nuclear testing in the Pacific.
In 1989, a delegation of activists, including bishop Gaillot went to Polynesia
to protest against tests.

In 1989-90, the Mouvement de la Paix
organized demonstrations at nuclear bases and against test sites, in Brest,
on the Plateau d'Albion, in the Marne, in the Landes, against new French
missiles, and at the arms fair of Le Bourget, against the arms trade.

In 1995, the Mouvement de la paix
has also acted against the resumption of French tests and collected over
100,000 signatures for this. Its action has consisted in initiating a demonstration
of 15,000 people on October 15, at the nuclear submarine base of l'Ile
Longue, in Brittany. On March 31 1996, it consisted in a peace march with
3,000 people in the Barp, near Bordeaux, on the site where a megajoule
laser is to be built for simulated testing.

The Mouvement de la Paix expresses
its solidarity with actions taken by other peace movements in Europe and
in the world.

It is a member of the International Peace Bureau
(IPB) and the World peace council
(WPC).

It supports and participates in Abolition 2000,
"a global network to eliminate nuclear weapons".

Its National council and National bureau comprise many personalities from
cultural and scientific circles.
Coming projects and actions
In 1996, the Mouvement de la Paix opposes French new nuclear
weaponsenvisaged in the "military programme" for 1997-2003. It rejects
the "eurobomb" plan, demands the dismantlement of NATO, and a new collective
security in Europe.
In May 1996, the Mouvement de la Paix has launched a petition
for "a nuclear weapon free world" and demand a genuine CTBT. The Mouvement
de la Paix strongly supports the convening of a 4th special UN
session of disarmament, nuclear disarmament in particular, as early as
1997.
Members
In France, the Mouvement de la Paix comprises 210 local committees
in cities and countries, and 250 additional correspondents in neighbourhoods
and companies.

Its secretariat has 9 members. Its coordinator is Daniel Durand. Other
members include Renée Aillaud, Daniel Cirera, Arielle Denis, Colette
Detré, Micheline Guilhaumon, Claude Lignières, Roland Nivet
and Guy Pin.
