55th Anniversary : three nations reunited

Moving ceremony in Périers for the 55th anniversary of D-Day
Moving ceremony in Périers for the 55th anniversary of D-Day

Approximately two hundred people attended the ceremonies marking the commemoration for the 55th anniversary of D-Day. In a symbolic deed, now usual in Périers, American Veterans of the 90th Division and German ones have bowed down before the War Memorial, beside the French population.

On Monday June 7, the town of Périers has celebrated with dignity and emotion the 55th anniversary of D-Day. For this occasion, our town was receiving two delegations of American and German Veterans, once again associated to share memory and meditation. After a religious œcuminical service filling the church, the procession went to the War Memorial. On the way, a wreath was laid by Colonel Hamilton and Mayor Didier Lecerf, tribute to the civilian victims of bombings. The deed was repeated at the War Memorial, close to the memory flame brought by three young children.
"Very sensitive to the presence of our American and German friends, I deeply and warmly thank each one of you for being present and participating to this memorial ceremony, said the Mayor of Périers. Together, we build the evidence that peoples just aspire to live simply in peace."
In front of the flags of all the district sections of Veterans and War Prisoners, Didier Lecerf did however insist on the fragility of peace.
"Let's combine our efforts to ascertain the stupidity of conflicts, so that sacrifice and suffering of our forefathers don't become pointless because of the megalomania of some great Power."
